A walk through the city of contrasts
Discover Dubai on footA walking tour of Dubai’s old quarter is the best way to get acquainted with the city’s heritage. We begin our trip in the Shindagha Area with a visit to Sheikh Saeed House – the residence of Sheikh Saeed Al Maktoum, which dates back to 1896 and houses a rare collection of memorabilia and documents which record Dubai’s history.
Leaving Sheikh Saeed House, we stop at the House of Camels and the Traditional House before heading towards the Creek. A short walk from the Creek brings us to Bastakiya. Established at the end of the 19th century by textile and pearl trading immigrants from Bastak in Iran, the area’s winding streets are lined with restored merchant’s houses, cafés, boutique hotels and art galleries, the oldest of which is the Majlis Gallery, dating back to the 1970s. We then walk through the textile market, the Hindu Temple area and the Old Souk, arriving at the abra station on the waterfront, from where we take the abra ride across the Creek. We continue our walk through the fragrant alleys of the spice souk on the Deira side of the Creek. From the spice souk, we move on to Dubai’s traditional gold souk which flaunts a dazzling display of jewellery. The large and bustling fish market near the gold souk is our last stop before we return to the hotel.
